Saloma’s Borneo Tribal odyssey- its back to nature (2D/1N)

It’s a long story; - Saloma, a native Bidayuh women, after seeing the corners of the world, it gave her a fresh perspective - Being responsible, empowering the underprivileged, sustaining the environment and contribute to the wellbeing of her own people. That makes her to be so special and to us in “making better places for people to live in and better places for people to visit.”

Her Saloma’s Homestay prioritise to improve the living conditions of her fellow Sadir villagers. It’s all about empowering and giving back to the Community. Among her sustainable effort towards responsible tourism is her store, Borneo Jungle United, the place where women in the neighbourhood can sell their hand-made crafts to be sold as souvenirs to her guests. She set up and maintain her library for the village children to read and learn and to see the world, all through her effort; to encourage her guests to contribute books and reading materials to stock her library for the sake of learning.

Start your morning journey from the city centre heading to the Saloma Homestay, located in Kampung Sadir, a traditional Bidayuh tribal village some 1.5-hours’ drive. Saloma’s house is located on the top of a hill, the edge of the Sadir village.

Upon arrival in the early afternoon, enjoy a warm welcome from Saloma and relax in the spacious traditional lounge, beautifully constructed with intricate native Bidayuh design elements. A brief introduction to the village, the homestay, and local culture will set the tone for your stay.

After a quick local native lunch, it’s time for a cooling off at the nearby waterfall and Saloma will take you to explore and experience a first-hand true jungle experience. Walk the narrow path through thick jungle, including multiple bamboo bridges along the way and ending the long day getting to the introduction of the village, its surrounding and the community inhabiting it.

The evening will be a quiet time with Saloma and her siblings introducing and sharing stories on the many wild edible plants, ferns and herbs at her backyard. Keen to try local native cooking skills, allow her to share her traditional native cooking skill preparing for a simple dinner for guests.

The early morning wakeup call are for the cock crows, children and neighbours preparing to go to school and adults preparing to make way for their journey to their farm.

After breakfast, take the opportunity to explore the village and meet the friendly local residents and curious children, always eager to learn about visitors and the outside world. Check out the library and see how you can help contribute to a better learning and understanding of the word surrounding them.

Before departing for the city, spend time taking photographs and sharing farewells with Saloma and the villagers. Guests are encouraged to make a token contribution to the Village Security and Development Fund as a meaningful remembrance of their stay in the village and support for the local community.
