Romancing the Wilderness of Ulu Baram

Sela'an-Linau is a potential ecotourism destination in northern Sarawak, offering an immersive journey into pristine rainforest landscapes, rich biodiversity, dramatic natural formations, and the living traditions of indigenous communities. The area combines untouched flora and fauna with authentic cultural and historical heritage that differs significantly from the more urbanized southern regions of Sarawak.

This 5 Days / 4 Nights eco-adventure is ideal for travelers seeking meaningful nature experiences, cultural exchange, river exploration, jungle trekking, and community-based tourism in one of Sarawak’s lesser-known wilderness regions.

Maximum size for this tour is 8 pax due to the ground 4WD transportation. This is necessary also to insure sustainability & low tourist impact on these villages and tribes visited.

Itinerary

In the morning, depart from Miri by 4WD for an overland journey to Sela’an Linau, approximately 4 hours through the interior of northern Sarawak. Upon arrival at Segah Sela’an Linau Homestay around noon, enjoy lunch and a short rest.

After lunch, continue by 4WD for about 45 minutes to visit Long Buboi Village, one of the 12 Penan communities in the Sela’an-Linau area. During the visit, explore the traditional longhouse settlement, visit their private room, and engage in a dialogue with the Village Chief and/his people to learn about Penan customs, traditions, and daily life.

Witness a traditional blowpipe demonstration, an important hunting skill among the Penan people, and visit the community’s herbal garden where various medicinal plants and traditional remedies are introduced.

Later in the afternoon, return to Segah Sela’an Linau via the same route. Swim and relax by Segah-Sela’an River. Dinner and overnight at the homestay.

After breakfast, depart for a full-day excursion to experience the culture and lifestyle of the Kenyah community. Travel by 4WD for approximately 45 minutes to visit Lio Mato Village, one of the remote highland settlements in the upper Baram region.

Explore the village, visit the century-old fort, which overlooks the upper Baram River and offers panoramic views, as well as the village school to gain insight into daily life in this remote community.

Continue with another hour’s drive to visit Apau Ubi Sela’an, a 4-family farm-house. Explore the garden and tour the farm-house. Participate in simple daily activities and chores before enjoying a freshly prepared BBQ lunch in the peaceful highland setting.

In the afternoon, return to Segah Sela’an Linau Homestay via the same route. Dinner and overnight at the homestay.

After breakfast at the homestay, embark on a Nature Retreat right in the heart of Borneo Wilderness, rejuvenating in the pools of Sela’an Waterfall with a drop of 100+ meters.

The journey takes about 45 minutes by 4WD, followed by a 45 minutes guided jungle trek to this secluded and spectacular spot in the midst of the dense dipterocarp forest.

Swim, relax and rejuvenate while your host prepares a traditional “Pansuh” lunch — a local delicacy where food is cooked inside bamboo over an open fire, offering an authentic taste of indigenous Bornean cuisine.

Return to Segah Sela’an Homestay via the same route. Dinner and overnight at the homestay.

After breakfast, depart by 4WD for approximately 45 minutes to a small settlement at Long Sait. Upon arrival, embark on a thrilling journey in a long-tailed boat for about 40 minutes to Sepigan (Penan) Village, located at the upper reaches of Selungo River, a tributary of the mighty Baram River.  

Explore the village and gain insight into the traditional lifestyle of the Penan community. Discover their gardens of medicinal and edible plants while take the opportunity to participate in their craftworks.

Return to Segah-Sela’an Homestay via the same route. Dinner and overnight at the homestay.

After breakfast, pack and depart back to Miri via 4WD / AirBorneo flight.
