Embark on a cultural and adventurous journey in Bario Highland, situated 3,250 feet above sea level. Day 1 includes a warm welcome, local homestay lunch, and exploration of Bario Asal longhouse. Day 2 offers a trek to Prayer Mountain, revealing a stunning 15-meter cross at the summit. Visit Pa'Umor and Batu Narit's ancient stone carvings, concluding with a departure on Day 3. Immerse yourself in the rich Kelabit heritage and breathtaking landscapes.

Itinerary
Upon arrival, meet & greet by our local guide at Bario airport. Bario Highland is one famous highland plateau that is located about 3,250 feet above sea level. It is located near to the border of Kalimantan, Indonesia. Surrounded by lush jungle-covered mountains, the area is renowned for its cool climate, tranquil atmosphere, and rich cultural heritage.
Enjoy a traditional lunch at a local homestay, offering an authentic taste of Kelabit hospitality and local specialties. After lunch, proceed to visit Bario Asal Longhouse and explore the surrounding village area, where guests can experience the unique lifestyle, traditions, and architecture of the Kelabit people community.
In the evening, return to the lodge for dinner and relaxation. Overnight at the lodge.
Early morning, light breakfast will be served before beginning the trek up to Prayer Mountain. The evelation of Prayer Mountain is approximately 1,430 metres above sea level with an elevation gain of about 340 metres from the trailhead. Trek up remained moderate until about 300 metres before the summit, where the challenge began. The slope was steep and ropes were provided to assist hikers along the ascent. At the summit stands an impressive 15-metre cross, erected in 2015 to replace the original smaller wooden cross. From the top, hikers are rewarded with magnificent panoramic views of the surrounding rainforest-covered mountains and the peaceful valleys of Bario Highlands.
After descending. return to the Lodge and rest. Lunch will be served.
After lunch, transfer by 4WD to Pa Umor, another Kelabit Longhouse and stop at Gems Lodge for refreshment. Stop at Batu Narit ( Stone Carvings ). Locals claim that this is actually a burial ground for a kelabit nobleman named Ritong hundreds years ago.The man made structures or carvings are called Megaliths, which date back thousand of years. The site was excavated in 1962 by British soldier Tom Harrison, one of the most popular megaliths.
In the afternoon, continue the journey by 4WD to Pa’ Umor, another traditional Kelabit settlement known for its scenic surroundings and longhouse community. Along the way, stop at Gems Lodge for refreshments.
The tour then proceeds to Batu Narit, a fascinating ancient stone carving site steeped in local legend and history. According to local belief, the site was once the burial ground of a Kelabit nobleman named Ritong, who lived hundreds of years ago. The man-made stone structures, known as megaliths, are believed to date back thousands of years and represent an important part of Kelabit heritage. The site was excavated in 1962 by British explorer and soldier Tom Harrisson, bringing wider recognition to one of Bario’s most significant archaeological landmarks.
Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
0800hrs – Breakfast. Continue with ‘Adopt a Turtle’ program (with a surcharge)
1100hrs – Depart from Pulau Talang-Talang Besar by boat to Sematan Jetty, then return by road to Kuching city via the same route with a stopover at a local restaurant for lunch. Transfer to hotel or airport in Kuching.

TURTLE CONSERVATION SLOTS FOR 2026
Sarawak Forestry offers a limited number of volunteer slots each year, available from May to September. Kindly let us know your preferred slot so we can check and confirm availability.
Remark: The Turtle Volunteer Programme is for adults aged 18 and above. Sarawak Forestry do not allow children to participate. Please note that these tours operate in small groups with other volunteers.
Note: The Sarawak Sea Turtle Volunteer Programme is not suitable for everyone. Accommodation facilities are basic (dorm-style hostel rooms, simple toilets & bathrooms, etc). Volunteers are expected to assist with cooking and cleaning. Participants will join a team of dedicated conservation experts whose mission is to monitor every turtle landing on the island, contributing directly to the preservation of Sarawak’s natural heritage. Volunteers can expect a rewarding ‘Back to Nature’ experience, but should bear in mind that this programme is not a beach holiday.
