Itinerary
Our adventure begins as we pick you up from the Sandakan Airport or your hotel in Sandakan, then we’ll head straight to Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre. There, you’ll get to learn about the rehabilitation effort done at the centre through a short video presentation. Then make your way to the feeding platform to witness the feeding of orangutans scheduled daily at 10:00 AM. You will also have the opportunity to observe the cheeky little young orang utans in an enclosed nursery area.
After lunch, embark on a 2½ hours journey by speedboat up the Kinabatangan River to Sukau Rainforest Lodge.
Right after checking-in, set out on a late afternoon river cruise in search of Borneo’s wildlife and birds including proboscis monkeys, macaques, hornbills, crocodiles, and, if you’re lucky, wild orangutans. Return to the lodge to savour a scrumptious dinner at Melapi restaurant, followed by an engaging slide presentation and interpretation by a naturalist guide.
Overnight at Sukau Rainforest Lodge.
Note: Guests are advised to arrive at Sandakan Airport no later than 8:00 AM on Day 1. If this is not possible, we recommend arriving a day earlier and spending one night in Sandakan or Sepilok before the tour begins.
Start the day with an early morning river cruise along the Kinabatangan River to the tranquil Kelenanap Oxbow Lake, one of the best locations for spotting Borneo’s remarkable wildlife and birdlife. Keep an eye out for hornbills, kingfishers, proboscis monkeys, macaques, crocodiles, and, with a little luck, wild orangutans and pygmy elephants.
Return to the lodge for breakfast. After breakfast, join in the nature walk along the lodge’s Hornbill Boardwalk with the in-house naturalist. Discover the fascinating flora and fauna of the rainforest while learning about its unique ecosystem and conservation efforts.
After lunch, enjoy some free time to relax and soak in the peaceful surroundings of the lodge. In the late afternoon, proceed for another river cruise in search of more wildlife as the rainforest comes alive towards dusk.
Return to the lodge for dinner and another restful night at Sukau Rainforest Lodge.
Begin the day with an early morning river cruise along the Menanggol River, one of the Kinabatangan’s most rewarding tributaries for wildlife viewing. Drift through the tranquil rainforest waterways in search of orangutans, proboscis monkeys, hornbills, crocodiles, and other fascinating wildlife that call this ecosystem home.
In the late afternoon, proceed 27 km overland journey to the vicinity of Gomantong Cave. From the park entrance, enjoy a 15-minute boardwalk trail through the rainforest to the cave system, where you may be fortunate enough to encounter the elusive “Man of the Jungle”—the wild orangutan—in its natural habitat.
As dusk approaches, witness one of Borneo’s most spectacular natural phenomena: the dramatic exodus of over two million bats emerging from the cave entrance, closely followed by raptors taking advantage of the evening spectacle.
Return to Sukau Rainforest Lodge for dinner and a relaxing overnight stay.
After breakfast, bid farewell to the rainforest as you journey back to Sandakan by boat, enjoying your final cruise along the scenic Kinabatangan River. Savour lunch before transferring to Sandakan Airport for the 1430hrs flight to Kota Kinabalu.
For those taking a later evening flight, an optional visit to the Rainforest Discovery Centre offers the perfect finale to your Borneo adventure. Stroll along the canopy walkway and suspension bridge for a bird’s-eye view of the rainforest, and explore the botanical garden, home to various species of Borneo’s native flora before your airport transfer.
