Bau Fairy & Wind Caves

Embark on an exciting journey from your hotel to explore the Bau Fairy and Wind Caves. The local community of Bau holds these caves in high reverence. Your journey begins with a scenic 45 km drive through the Sarawak countryside, passing several farms and plantations before reaching Bau town — a charming, up-country town primarily inhabited by the Bidayuh tribe. Along the way, your guide will share insights into the local agricultural practices of the Sarawak local farmers.

The Fairy Cave, is situated approximately 8 km from Bau Town, nestled on Mount Kapur. The cave’s entrance is perched about 36 meters above the cliff’s base, accessible via a concrete staircase featuring over 100 steps. After the climb, visitors are rewarded with a stunning view of the valley below, showcasing its forests and fields, making the effort worthwhile.

As you enter, a charming wooden staircase guides you to the enchanting Chambers of the Fairies’ Caves. You’ll encounter striking formations of stalagmites and stalactites, some uncannily human-like in shape or perhaps even sense the presence of fairies! For the Bidayuh tribe who live in Bau today, the Chamber of this cave is believed to be the home of fairies, and also home to the people who turned to stone in the legendary Kapur village. You’ll be captivated as your guide shares the intriguing tales of the Fairies’ Caves and the stone people. However, to the Chinese people, who live in the same town, they believe this cave to be the Home of their Gods and Goddess, you will see worships of two different religions in this cave, the pagan of fairy religion of native Bidayuhs, and the Chinese ancestral worship, burning of joss sticks and offerings. From the chamber, a trail leads to the hilltop of Mount Kapur, offering panoramic views of the surrounding villages, valleys, and forest.

The adventure continues with a visit to The Wind Cave. A natural, continuous breeze flows through the tunnels — the feature that gives the cave its name. The Wind Cave is a tubular limestone cave formed 60 million years ago. The planked boardwalk makes it easy to traverse, and there are many stalactites and stalagmite formations along the passage. Here, you can unwind beneath large sunshades made from tropical hardwood, surrounded by lush forest and a river that runs alongside. The cave opens out onto a hillside where you can walk down to a sandy beach on the bank of a tributary of the Sarawak River. Picnic area, toilet and change rooms are available for your convenience so you may wish to take a cool dip in the river to cool off. After your exploration, return to Kuching.
