4 DAYS 3 NIGHTS MULU CAVES + PINNACLES

Mulu began millions of years ago under the sea where layers of sandstone, limestone and shale were formed and then lifted above the sea level, buckled and folded to form steep mountains of sandstone and limestone. Over time with heavy rain, river, changing level of underground water table and chemical reaction of mildly acidic water eroded them to form some of the most dramatic karst landscapes of pinnacles, caves, cracks, sink holes, joints, pendants, blades, passages, chambers while evaporation created stalactites, stalagmites and columns.

This adventure tour showcases the very best of Gunung Mulu National Park, combining world-class cave exploration with the ultimate physical challenge – the legendary Pinnacles Summit Trek. The first two days are dedicated to exploring Mulu’s vast and remarkable underground network. These explorations offer an unforgettable glimpse into one of the planet’s most impressive karst landscapes. The final two days are devoted to conquering the iconic Pinnacles of Gunung Api. The Pinnacles consist of a dramatic series of 45-meter-high razor-sharp limestone spikes rising above the surrounding rainforest. Located midway up the slopes of Gunung Api, they form one of Southeast Asia’s most striking natural formations.

Upon arrival at Mulu Airport, meet and greet by our friendly representative and transfer to your accommodation of choice – Mulu Marriott Resort & Spa, Mulu National Park HQ or private lodge. Early afternoon, meet up at the resort’s lobby or at the Park HQ to proceed on foot via the 3.8km designated path for 45mins through the peat swamp forest to explore Lang Cave first. Lang Cave is considered the youngest of the 4 show-caves; therefore, it’s smaller but produces some of the most spectacularly large limestone formations including the Jelly Fish-like stalactite. Next explore Deer Cave, the entrance of which can contain the size of St. Paul Cathedral 5 times over. Late evening, witness millions of bats’ flying out of the cave entrance (only during fine weather). Return journey on the same plank walk back to the Park HQ then transfer back to your accommodation for rest and free at own leisure. Dinner and overnight at your accommodation.

After breakfast at around 0830hrs, your guide will meet you to proceed up streams of Melinau River by open wooden longboat with stopover at Penan Settlement. The guide will give some commentary about this tribe. Feel free to check out local handicrafts and arts for sale at the Penan Settlement before heading on to the caves.

Back to the boat and continue further up to explore Cave of the Winds known for beautiful formation of caves speleothems with its impressive ‘King’s Chamber’ the interior of which simulates scenes from the Indiana Jones movie. About 500m away is the Clearwater Cave, the longest underground river system in Southeast Asia with a total length of almost 200km. Walk along a plankwalk next to the limestone cliff and climb up approximately 250 concrete steps to reach the entrance of Clearwater Cave. Marvel at the one leaf plant Monophyllaea pendula which are endemic to Sarawak, Borneo, Malaysia and can only be found at Mulu.

After exploring both caves then you can take a dip at Clearwater Spring to rejuvenate yourselves before having picnic lunch by the crystal-clear pool in front of Clearwater cave. After lunch, transfer by open longboat along the Melinau River and disembark at Kuala Litut. From here, begin a 9 km trek along the natural Melinau Trail within Gunung Mulu National Park. The trail is generally flat and well-marked, taking approximately 3 hours to reach Camp 5. Upon arrival at Camp 5, settle into your accommodation. Your guide will conduct a briefing on facilities, safety guidelines, and preparations for the following day’s activities. Dinner and overnight at Camp 5.

Wake up early for breakfast before preparing to ascend Gunung Api at around 06:30 hrs. It is recommended to do some light stretching beforehand, and your guide will lead the way along the trail. As you make your ascent, you’ll pass through lush rainforest featuring a variety of plants, including orchids and pitcher plants, as well as opportunities to spot local bird species. Upon reaching the viewpoint at approximately 2,400 meters, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the dramatic Pinnacle formations. Enjoy a packed lunch at the summit before beginning the descent back to Camp 5. Dinner and overnight at Camp 5.

Breakfast at Camp 5, then embark on a jungle trek to Long Litut. From there, transfer to Clearwater Summer Hut for picnic lunch. Later, enjoy a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear spring waters. Transfer to Mulu Airport for your flight departure.
